Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of creating tailored content, whether that’s blog posts, individual web pages, or websites, to best suit the search engine’s guidelines and requirements. The greater SEO-optimized a website or individual page is, the higher it will appear on search results.

Far too many businesses and bloggers do not take into account SEO practices, working in the dark and hoping for overnight results with little to no strategy. Your website may be the best in your niche; however, if you’re not letting Google and other search engines know this, then you won’t rank or compete with your competitors.

This article is a basic guide for beginners, beginning with a quick introduction to various SEO practices.

Various SEO practices

To give you an idea of exactly what SEO is, I’ve compiled a short list of common practices below:

  • Keyword research and focused content
  • Optimized meta descriptions & headings
  • Decreasing website load times
  • Optimizing image size and format
  • Ensuring all web pages and posts are indexed frequently

Above is just a glimpse of the very basic practices, most of which are fairly straightforward, but do take the time to learn and conduct. For this reason, many businesses choose to seek outside help.

What are the benefits of SEO?

If you’re a small or mid-sized business, adopting and implementing an SEO strategy could be far more effective than any current ad or marketing strategy you’ve got running. Unlike other paid traffic methods, search engine optimization produces consistent organic traffic at no cost – it can’t be beaten.

Nonetheless, other benefits of adopting an SEO strategy include:

  • Improved user experience
  • Increased conversion rates
  • Enhanced brand awareness
  • Encourages local users to visit your shop or physical store

Once again, this is just a snippet of the many benefits that search engine optimization has to offer – when I said it was unlike any other method, I really meant it.

To conclude

Search engine optimization, otherwise known as SEO, is a free strategy to improve user experience, jump up the search engines, and increase organic, consistent traffic to your website.
