If you’ve noticed your website traffic dropping since Google rolled out AI Overviews, you’re not alone. I’ve heard the same concern from business owners, marketers, and fellow SEOs wondering whether AI has made their content irrelevant overnight.

The short answer is no. AI Overviews are evolving how people search and click, but they’re only one piece of a much bigger shift. Sure, AI-generated answers can reduce clicks, especially for informational searches. However, all AI overviews cite their sources, and those sources get a nice, prominent link.

Here’s how AI search affects SEO, and what I’m doing to help client websites stay visible. This post will also teach you some practical ways to optimize for AI traffic.

AI Overviews Changed Search Traffic

Are you fed up with all the buzz around AI? You are not alone. There’s no denying the impact that AI overviews have had on search traffic. People are increasingly relying on voice assistants and smart devices to answer their queries.

Still, blaming AI Overviews for every traffic drop is a little like blaming the weather because you’re late for work. They matter, but they’re only part of a much bigger change in how people search.

Search Has Been Moving Toward Fewer Clicks for Years

Google has tried every trick in the book to keep users on its search pages, even before AI became a thing. Google has been directly answering user queries for years via:

  • Featured snippets.
  • Knowledge panels.
  • Local packs.
  • Shopping results.
  • “People Also Ask.”

Overviews simply combine those ideas into a more complete, conversational response while acing user intent like never before.

Zero-Click Searches Are Becoming the Default

AI overviews have almost totally wiped out SERP clicks for informal searches, though users still click on the links provided.

Google wants to use AI overviews to retain most users who are searching for definitions, quick comparisons, and basic how-to guides.

Search Became More Contextual and Conversational

Snippets are only one part of Google’s strategy to bolster the quality of search results.
As more and more people use voice assistants like Google Home or Amazon Echo, conversational search is on the rise.

Users can ask questions, get answers, and follow up on the same thread. The quality of answers improves as the AI gains more context.

It’s very empowering when you don’t have to keep starting over when you have a follow-up question about something you had searched.

Traffic Isn’t the Only Measure of Success

Learn how to get mentioned by ChatGPT and Google AI, and you’ll quickly realize that traffic is no longer that significant for success. That’s the impact of AI on digital marketing.

Qualified visitors still matter far more than raw visitor counts, and AI does a great job of filtering out visitors who’re just looking for quick answers. Users are more likely to click through to your site and convert if they’re referred to you by Google’s AI mode rather than its SERPs.

How AI Overviews Actually Affect Website Traffic

Traffic hasn’t dropped evenly across the web. Some websites have taken a major hit, while others have barely noticed a difference. The difference comes down to search intent.

Informational Searches Lose the Most Clicks

AI Overviews are designed to answer questions. If someone searches, “What is technical SEO?” or “How long does a roof last?” Google can often provide enough information without the user leaving the results page.

Sure, it may offer citation links, but the user usually trusts the answer without verifying the sources.

Consequently, publishers that rely heavily on informational content are seeing the biggest declines. Their content may still rank well, but fewer people need to click through to get a basic answer.

Commercial Searches Still Drive Traffic

People researching a product or service usually need:

  • Reviews.
  • Pricing.
  • Examples.
  • Comparisons.
  • Reassurance.

Businesses targeting commercial and transactional searches still have plenty of opportunities to attract qualified visitors.

Authority Matters More Than Ever

AI Overviews favor sources that demonstrate expertise, cover topics thoroughly, and consistently publish reliable information.

So, topical authority is even more valuable. Instead of publishing dozens of unrelated articles, it’s better to build a library of high-quality content around the subjects you want to be known for.

You also need to learn how to create content that resonates with your audience

Visibility and Traffic Are No Longer the Same Thing

You need to appreciate that AI can improve your sales by reducing your traffic. It’s an oxymoron that works by driving qualified traffic with high conversion rates.

Your content can appear in an AI Overview, influence the answer Google generates, and strengthen your brand even if visits plummet.

Many websites are trading volume for higher-quality exposure. You can’t tell unless you’re:

  1. Measuring leads.
  2. Tracking changes in your conversion rate.
  3. Checking for brand recognition alongside traffic.

Stop Chasing Rankings and Start Optimizing for AI Answers

Ranking on page one still matters, but earning the trust of AI systems is becoming increasingly important.

AI Looks for the Best Answer, Not the Best Ranked

Google’s AI differs from previous featured snippets that copied the first organic result. Instead, it pulls together information from multiple trusted sources to generate a helpful response.

A lower-ranked page with clear, authoritative information can sometimes influence an AI Overview more than a higher-ranked page.

Structure Your Content for Easy Extraction

As mentioned before, AI systems love content that’s easy to understand, so work with:

  • Clear headings.
  • Concise explanations.
  • Bullet lists.
  • Tables.
  • Direct answers.

I still write for people first. I just make it easier for search engines and AI to understand what my content is saying.

Build Topical Authority Instead of Chasing Keywords

Publishing one great article isn’t enough anymore. AI is far more likely to trust websites that consistently demonstrate expertise across a topic.

I recommend focusing on clusters of related content. The more complete the resource, the stronger the authority signal.

SEO, AEO, and GEO Work Together

Websites that were built on strong SEO foundations before AI have an advantage with AEO and GEO. The strong technical foundation of SEO is still essential to the success of AEO and GEO.

AEO builds on SEO by optimizing for voice search. You need to understand the intent behind queries and their context.

Likewise, GEO builds on local SEO by creating content specific to a particular geographic location. It’s crucial for local businesses that want to attract customers from their surrounding area.

I don’t see these as competing strategies. They’re simply different ways of optimizing to become the most trustworthy answer available. It would also be good look into SEO-AEO integration.

How to Get Cited in Google AI Overviews

Everyone wants to know the secret to getting cited in AI Overviews. I wish I could tell you there’s a checkbox hidden somewhere in the Search Console, but there isn’t.

Google keeps telling us, in various ways, “Publish content that’s helpful, trustworthy, and easy to understand.”

Answer the Question Before You Tell the Story

I’ve audited plenty of pages that spend 500 words warming up before answering the question in the title. Most readers won’t wait that long, and neither will AI.

Lead with the answer. Then, use the rest of the article to explain the why, the how, and the exceptions. It makes for a better reading experience, and it gives Google something clear to reference.

Write Like an Expert, Not a Dictionary

AI can summarize facts all day long, but it can’t manufacture experience. When I explain a strategy, I like to include what I’ve seen in the real world.

For example, I’m likely to mention positive or negative experiences I’ve had migrating sites. Remember, every migration or maintenance project is unique. There are always exceptions, caveats, and aha moments.

How do you write like an expert? Here are some tips:

  1. Share real-world experiences to show you have hands-on experience in the topic.
  2. Explain the why so users can understand the reasoning behind a strategy or technique.
  3. Avoid using technical jargon or acronyms without proper explanation, as it can be confusing for non-technical readers.

Make Your Content Easy to Follow

Great content doesn’t need to be complicated. Short paragraphs, descriptive headings, comparison tables, and bullet lists help readers find answers quickly.

They help Google, too. The easier your page is to understand, the easier it becomes to identify the information worth citing.

Cover the Entire Conversation

One answer usually leads to another question, and chatbots are leaning heavily into this human psychology.

That’s why you need to try answering the next five questions before readers have to ask. You’ll build topical authority, keep visitors engaged, and improve your odds of featuring in AI-generated answers.

Keep Earning Google’s Trust

  • Revisit important pages regularly.
  • Improve weak sections.
  • Update outdated information.
  • Add new insights when they matter.

How to Get Mentioned by ChatGPT and Google AI

Every AI platform has an in-house way of finding and citing information, but they all reward helpful, trustworthy content. Focus on becoming the best source on your topic, and you’ll improve your chances of being mentioned across:

  • Google AI.
  • ChatGPT.
  • Gemini.
  • Claude.
  • Perplexity.

Publish Original Information

Original content gives AI something valuable to reference, and AI can’t generate primary information without a source. Isn’t that a win-win?

Share firsthand experience that generic AI articles can’t match, such as:

  • Case studies.
  • Customer stories.
  • Experiments.
  • Survey results.

I always look for opportunities to share what I’ve learned from real projects. Those insights create value for readers and make the content more distinctive.

Build Topical Authority

You want to lead with the answer, not chase unrelated keywords. Over time, those articles become a complete resource that demonstrates expertise across the topic.

Earn Mentions Across the Web

Search engines and AI systems gain more confidence to cite or refer to your brand when there’s online activity confirming your street credibility.

You also want your brand to get mentioned positively throughout the internet. Expand your digital footprint with:

  • Interviews.
  • Podcasts.
  • Local news.
  • Industry publications.
  • Guest articles.
  • Active community participation.

Stay Consistent

Every helpful article, updated guide, video, or success story strengthens your reputation. Keep publishing, keep improving, and keep answering your audience’s questions better than anyone else.

That’s the strategy I expect to keep working, regardless of how AI search evolves.

How to Track AI Traffic and Visibility

Google Search Console still tops the list of tools for tracking your search performance. Watch for changes in impressions, clicks, click-through rates, and the queries driving your traffic.

AI Overviews don’t have a dedicated report yet, but trends often reveal where AI-generated answers are influencing user behavior. Rising impressions paired with lower click-through rates usually signal that searchers are finding answers before reaching your website.

Track AI Referral Traffic

Platforms like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot can send visitors directly to your website.

Review your referral traffic regularly to see which AI platforms are driving visits. As AI adoption grows, these referral sources will become a more valuable part of your traffic mix.

Measure Conversions Alongside Traffic

A thousand visitors mean very little if none of them become customers.

  • Compare AI traffic with your other acquisition channels.
  • Look at engagement, lead generation, sales, phone calls, form submissions, or whatever defines success for your business.

A smaller audience with stronger intent often delivers better results than a larger audience looking for quick answers.

Watch the Long-Term Trends

Review your performance monthly instead of reacting to daily fluctuations. Small changes become meaningful patterns over time, making it easier to identify what’s working and where your content deserves more attention.

What Smart Businesses Should Do Next

AI Overviews have changed how people search, but they haven’t changed what makes a website valuable. People still want accurate information, expert advice, and businesses they can trust. AI simply helps them find those answers in a different way.

To me, it’s a chance, not a setback. AI will drive higher-converting traffic if you keep putting out helpful content. The metrics may change, but the fundamentals remain the same.

If your traffic has dropped, resist the urge to chase shortcuts or wait for search to go back to the way it was. Focus on becoming the best resource in your niche. That’s the strategy I believe will continue to win, whether someone finds your business through Google Search, an AI Overview, ChatGPT, or whatever comes next.
