Over the last decade I’ve spent developing websites, I’ve learned that some key elements make a website truly user-friendly. They include using easy-to-read text, avoiding bright or overly dark colors, optimizing your site for mobile use, and many more. Google also has a unique set of factors that determine the user-friendliness of websites.

Did you know that all major search engines want to present the best resources to their users? The goal is to ensure that the websites they display in search results are valuable, relevant, and easy to use. So, user-friendliness is a big issue for search engines and should be a huge concern for any website owner.

In this post, I’ll explain website user friendliness from the perspectives of users and search websites. We’ll then review some tips on making your website truly user-friendly. As always, we start with the basics.

Why Website User-Friendliness Matters

In an earlier post, I explained why user experience matters in web design, but here’s a quick recap.

User-friendliness is a term describing how easy and enjoyable visitors find using your website. The internet is flooded with countless content and product alternatives, so if your website isn’t user-friendly, visitors will quickly move on to the next option.

No one stays on a website that is hard to navigate, slow to load, or unpleasant to look at. A user-friendly website helps visitors quickly find what they’re looking for, keeping them longer and boosting their likelihood of becoming customers.

There’s also reputation management to consider. Visitors with a positive experience on your site are more likely to recommend it, share it on social media, and become returning customers. On the flip side, negative experiences can quickly spread through word-of-mouth or online reviews.

User-friendliness benefits visitors and significantly impacts SEO also. Search engines rely on multiple metrics to determine a website’s relevancy and value, and user-friendliness is one of them.

A poorly designed website that’s challenging to use also suffers from high bounce rates and low average sessions, negatively affecting its search visibility.

The Role of Accessibility and Inclusivity

An accessible website means that people with disabilities, such as visual or motor impairments, can easily use it. The World Bank estimates that 15% of the world’s population has some form of disability, so it’s crucial to consider their needs when designing your website.

Why would you want to cut your target audience and market by 15%? Accessibility also boosts SEO because search engines demand that publishers be more inclusive.

Inclusivity goes beyond accessibility and refers to creating a website that is welcoming and inclusive of all individuals, no matter their background or identity. It can include:
