{"id":2713,"date":"2015-01-21T15:08:21","date_gmt":"2015-01-21T20:08:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jarodthornton.com\/bemis3lf\/?p=2713"},"modified":"2015-01-21T15:08:21","modified_gmt":"2015-01-21T20:08:21","slug":"depression","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jarodthornton.com\/bemis3lf\/2015\/01\/21\/depression\/","title":{"rendered":"More on depression"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Charles Darwin coined the idea that emotional tension, anxiety and and manic states are triggers for &#8220;head symptoms.&#8221; \u00a0Of the many named\u00a0ailments he noted\u00a0\u201cfits\u201d brought on by \u201cexcitements,\u201d \u201cflurries\u201d leading to an \u201cuncomfortable palpitation of the heart\u201d and \u201cair fatigues\u201d that triggered his \u201chead symptoms.\u201d \u00a0His symptoms have been attributed to everything from lactose intolerance to Chagas disease \u2014 Darwin himself was most troubled by his recurring mental problems. His depression left him \u201cnot able to do anything one day out of three,\u201d choking on his \u201cbitter mortification.\u201d He despaired of the weakness of mind that ran in his family.<br \/>\n\u201cPain or suffering of any kind,\u201d he wrote, \u201cif long continued, causes depression and lessens the power of action, yet it is well adapted to make a creature guard itself against any great or sudden evil.\u201d And so sorrow was explained away, because pleasure was not enough. Sometimes, Darwin wrote, it is the sadness that informs as it \u201cleads an animal to pursue that course of action which is most beneficial.\u201d The darkness was a kind of light.<br \/>\nObsessed with our pain, we will retreat from everything. We will stop eating, unless we start eating too much. Sex will lose its appeal; sleep will become a frustrating pursuit. We will always be tired, even though we will do less and less.
