Dog Slaughter Falls

Dog Slaughter Falls

I took a trip to Dog Slaughter falls deep in the Daniel Boone Nat. Forest. It was awesome and full of adventure.

A few eventful moments

I arrived to the campsite rather late in the evening and there was no daylight. Nearly loosing my way we finally found the site just in time to keep from venturing the trail head too deep…
It had been raining and everything was soaked. Luckily I brought dry firewood but we had no kindling. I had to improvise and as a last resort used TP to get our fire going. I fought the fire for hours to keep it going and it was entertaining. I did have a camp fire sufficient for roasting over sized marshmallows and that was great. However, I failed to prepare and bring veggie foil packs so there was that… But I did have some great food none-the-less.
The next morning I reveled over the defeated firewood that was burnt to a fine white ash and marveled at how difficult that task had been. I packed up the gear and prepared for the short hike to the falls. As you will see below, I captured many photos to highlight my findings and fun times.
There was this moment where I encountered aggressive hornets and Max and I took several stings… My best guess is that the hornets, like myself, lacked the morning caffeine fix and weren’t in the mood for unexpected visitors. That freeking hurt…

Hornets Nest
^ Hornets Nest – Can you see it? We didn’t either…
Eventually we came to our destination and had an absolute blast playing in the falls. Overall, a very successful journey and absolute fun.

Dog Slaughter Falls. Don’t let the name deceive you. This is one of the most scenic waterfalls in the forest. It’s also one that you can count on being there even during the driest days of summer, when many other waterfalls have disappeared. The falls are nearly 20 feet high and lie at the bottom of a hemlock-sheltered cove. The falls can be reached by Dog Slaughter Trail #414. It is one mile from the lower trailhead off Forest Service Road 195, 2.7 miles south of KY 90.

Dog Slaughter Falls Trail is a 1 mile there and back trail located near Cumberland Falls in Kentucky. The trail follows Dogslaughter Creek though surrounding cliffs and fallen rocks all the way to the waterfall. The trail has a few 2ft wide creek crossings and semi-steep rock steps.
