Search engine optimization, also known as SEO, is an effective method of improving user experience, not to mention generating more traffic to your website. This can lead to more leads, sales, or for local businesses, increased footfall.

In particular, however, while all businesses can use SEO, small and local businesses are likely to see the biggest benefit, for several reasons, of which will be explained in this article.

Less competition

Firstly, unlike websites that target generic keywords, such as “running shoes” or “best smartwatches,” small and local businesses can target much more unique and specific keywords, for instance, “best takeout fish and chips in Danville, Kentucky.”

As this is more specific, the keyword also contains higher search intent: your target audience is already looking for a fish and chip shop in their local area and, therefore, are more likely to follow up and make a purchase.

Furthermore, with tools such as Google my business, you are better equipped to rank locally, competing with more generic keywords and rival businesses – if you’re not already using this platform, you’re seriously missing out!

More people are likely to find your store

If you have a physical store, local SEO will help people find this, even if it appears to be in the middle of nowhere with little to no directions. This is thanks to local SEO methods and tools, as aforementioned.

On your website, you should provide directions and opening times for your business. The more information you provide, the better. Remember: it’s not just about providing the consumer with the most accurate details, but Google and other search engines, too.

Increased website traffic

Finally, practicing and implementing SEO will result in increased website traffic, if done correctly. In particular, you should create a blog schedule, releasing new blog posts in your niche targeting one to two keywords in your industry at a time.

Ultimately, targeting more keywords will generate more traffic to separate posts. The more users that land on a post or page, the greater likelihood these will follow-up, turning into a lead, sale, or physical visit to your store.
